Celebrating 40 Years as an OLS

December 5, 2020
TODAY marks 40 years since I received my commission as an Ontario Land Surveyor.  So much has changed within our profession since then over the years.  Once I graduated from the University of Toronto in 1978, I started working with steel tapes and plumb bobs for measuring distances, paper based land ownership records and drafting with pens on linen fabric.
After completing my two years of Articles with a semi-retired Surveyor and cramming for the Professional Exam, I was eagerly looking forward to a professional career -- just as the first of several recessions hit.  In less than two years, I found myself unemployed due to the lack of work and like many others in the same situation, I “hung out my shingle” with fellow unemployed Surveyor John Ward.
John left to pursue other interests after several years but taught me the basics of running a business.  And how that business has grown, mostly through the dedication of our fantastic staff (there are 15 of us now!).  Looking ahead with partner Kevin Smith BSC. ENG, OLS, CLS I see great things continuing to happen.

The Reviews

Dept of Justice

Our contact at Canadian Heritage noted in her reply:
“Thank you for your survey returns for the above noted project.  We are very pleased with the quality of the work.  We are also very pleased with the Encroachment Report and the supporting photographs.”
Of note, our plans and reports were used for samples in subsequent RFPs.
